Art

Sofie's artwork is really cracking me up lately. Today she showed me some of the drawings she made in her little daily planner. Among them were this ballerina doing an arabesque with a red tutu on and two sets of, "those things you wear on your head." (AKA: Earphones!)

Treasure!

Look what we found hiding in a cove above the basement stairs today. Oh how I wish I knew the story behind this threadbare flag!

Yard!

Thought I'd focus on an accomplishment since we are running into our fair share of setbacks as we knock the house down!

This weekend the kids and I set about cleaning up rockville (aka: our yard full of red rocks). We are looking forward to putting some grass in someday soon, but at the moment that doesn't make the long list of first priorities!

I spent the weekend pulling out multiple four foot tall thistles that had taken up residence in the rocks and then the piece de la resistance, a 400 square foot section (see photo below!) of yard that was completely covered with a lush forest of some sort of vining weed. The vines were doing their best to suck the life out of the bush and the grapevine so I had to pull them free of each. I worked around the perimeter of the vines and ended up with an enormous snowman style roll of vines that Ben had to help me carry to the dumpster! Incidentally the grapevine is on the property line and therefore shared with our neighbors Julianne and Barb. I hear that it flowers regularly but has never produced any grapes. We'll have to see if we can figure out how to get some grapes to grow!

On Sunday we bought ourselves some new plants and a few big bags of compost and went to work on the flower beds in the front. They look a little sparse now, but should fill in with the perennials and bushes we selected. (That is if I can manage to keep them alive!)

I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding how to handle the blank dirt area of the bed. Coloradoans don't typically use mulch because strong winds do a superb job of blowing it all away. Instead, you see a lot of rock (I think we've got more than enough of that already!) or you see beds that are completely packed with plants so that you can no longer see the ground. I imagine we'll have to think about procuring some prettier river rocks or just live with it looking sparse until the plants fill in.

(Lots and lots of weeds in our dumpster. So satisfying!)

Inspiration

Seeking inspiration at the end of a long day, I tore out the carpet in the front bedroom. Look at what was underneath!

It's in great shape! Refinishing should be a piece of cake!

In a REAL people house!!!

After months of botched attempts we are FINALLY homeowners!! We closed this morning on a 100 year old wreck of a house in a fabulous neighborhood. We are looking forward to (and slightly terrified by) the many renovations that we have ahead of us in the process of making this house our home. Stay tuned, we will definitely be sharing our progress on the blog!
